azimute, das sind cesare marchese und der einigen techno-insidern nicht unbekannte schweizer philippe quenum. was die beiden zusammen fabrizieren lässt uns tatsächlich sprachlos zurück: obwohl sie gerade mal auf sieben releases zurückblicken, haben die zwei es doch tatsächlich geschafft in kürzester zeit auf labels wie crosstown rebels oder sogar transmat zu landen… und jetzt auch noch den weg auf cocoon recordings gefunden! ihr titel „the secret“ gibt ein wenig vor, was wir gerade beschrieben haben, denn momentan kann man azimute noch wirklich als geheimtipp bezeichnen. ihr cocoon release dürfte einer unserer releases mit dem höchsten soul-faktor sein. betörende vocals, klackernde percussion-sounds aus den untiefen des techno-klanguniversums und im zusätzlichen house-mix noch mal alles mit warmen und hypnotischen filter chords dekoriert servieren uns azimute eine produktion mit unglaublich viel tiefgang. azimute erwischt uns hier voll auf dem richtigen fuß, die beiden originalversionen werden uns noch lange über die kommenden wochen begleiten. als bonus gibt es noch einen cristi cons remix obendrauf. in bester villalobos oder cadenza spielart entfaltet dieser über sage und schreibe 11 minuten und 34 sekunden seinen minimalvibe und öffnet damit noch mal eine weitere faszinierende musikalische tür. drei versionen, die alles aber nicht gewöhnlich sind und die hier seit tagen in heavy rotation laufen! mile grazie azimute!

being selfish, is one of the good things about running your own label. if you please, you can just try and re-release that certain record that you always wanted for yourself, but never could get your hand on it. now, you can just edit it the way you always wanted it to be (oh, those fade-outsà) and press it up. this is one of these occasions. when kalk (the collaborative project of philippe heinen and joffrey becker) was released on julien briffaz label brif in 1999, i just had started to dj out at a club in darmstadt (the late cafÚ kesselhaus) and the restrained, yet punchy house tracks symbolized what i liked about deep house back then: a mellow alternative to the bpm hunt and rigid attitude in mainstream techno, while not losing itself in chin-stroking wisdom or pesky noodling. it seemed that there werent too many around with the same desire. otherwise akasha wouldnt have remained a diamond in disguise and not what morgan geist so aptly named an unclassic. by his definition, that is: an old by and large forgotten record that would have deserved to be hit. if you take discogs as an indicator, more and more people start to think so though. here is your second chance to obtain a copy of the spirit of kalk. mildly edited and restored in the best human-possible way. mind you, its old house music from days of yore. dj gj

motor city drum ensembles dj kicks mix is the latest installation into the outstanding discography of danilo plessow, and is not to be missed. the addition of a selection of mcde exclusive tracks, and the majority of tracks being rare pieces of music from danilos personal collection make this a mix of not only exceptional mixing capability.

a selection of forgotten demos by band hymn, active 1981-1984, with multi-talented musician and post-punk pioneer lucas trouble (†2016) in the lineup. dition of 400 numbered copies. hand stamped sleeve. includes insert with photos, artwork and liner notes. all the tracks were originally self-released as demo tapes in a very limited run. their first work, coming home, was published in 1983, and the second one, too many lies, in 1984. both of them were distributed by the band themselves. shortly after, they released a more widely known 12” ep, tired (nova express, 1984), with a different line-up and noticeably more rock-oriented. definers of a totally genuine sound, hymn were coevals to the underground-synth-post-punk movement that surfaced in france in the early eighties, easily recognisable today via cult labels such as bain total and invisible/scopa records, with stunning releases by experimental references like ilitch, philippe doray or incontinents.

we’re glad to welcome back aun to cyclic law for their latest opus! aun’s music as always suggested forays into other dimensions, be it to imaginary worlds, industrial wastelands, through space and time, or via mind altered states. from the ominous dystopian artwork, of a city being drained of its energy by some mysterious black hole, to the first notes of the title track “fiat lux” we are once again transported on aun’s otherworldly travelling path. ever since the space industrial and power electronics of aun’s previous cyclic law cult release “black pyramid”, the world has become even more sinister, but in contrast, “fiat lux” exudes even more of aun’s melancholic hopefulness. the disintegrating chords and densely textured waves, anchored by a left field industrial pulse, invoke occult drug enhanced, future psychedelia. created in part in their montreal studio, these tracks were extensively performed live, prior to recording, and refined while on tour breaks in montpellier, barcelona and tokyo. the energy of these cities is definitely at work in these recordings, which also features a french connection of experimental heavy hitters: witxes, frédéric d. oberland and philippe petit have helped round out dumais and leblanc’ arsenal. fiat lux: let there be light, from light will come darkness.

peripheral minimal is proud to present the new 12inch by the french electronic pioneer, philippe laurent, entitled, phoenix. this will be philippes second release on peripheral minimal after the infectious synthetic classic 12inch, mithra. phoenix is a three track ep featuring two brand new tracks on the a-side, phoenix (featuring philippe s trademark robotic vocals), and, agapao. meanwhile over on the b-side, we have the 13-minute electronic opus and highly representative of his early work, exposition 4, a never before released track from philippes extensive archive, and recorded in 1982. the e.p. is representative of philippe s latest forays into contemporary synth music, but still with a retro futurist edge and influenced partly by german pioneers kraftwerk/late 70s kosmische and au courant electro/synthwave acts, fitting into the current enthusiasm for early 80s synth pop and minimal wave. the ep is presented on white vinyl and limited to 300 copies. mastering by martin bowes @ the cage.

die form is a french post-industrial and electronic band formed in 1977-1978. the name die form means (the) form/shape in german and is a play on the english homonym deformed and on the french homonym difforme (deformed). die form is the primary project of electronic musician and multimedia artist philippe fichot. he began by recording a number of experimental cassette releases in the late 1970s and formed the bain total label to release these early cassettes, as well as various side projects such as krylon hertz, camera obscura, eva-johanna reichstag, hurt and fine automatic.

philippe quenum returns to cadenza music with ‘solitaire’, some thirteen years after helping kick start the swiss label with the 2003 release ‘orange mistake’/ funky dandy’. this groundbreaking single, co-produced with luciano, has since become a landmark release, not just for the label, but also as the benchmark for the micro-house and minimal tech-house genre that developed over the decade. with a music career than spans back to the mid-80s (dancing in nyc as part of the breakdance troupe, the magnificent force), quenum found his forte with house music, both as a dj, and as a producer and label owner. setting up the access 58 label in 1998 as a platform for his music and collaborations, quenum has consistently released over the years for labels like crosstown rebels, soma, alphahouse, thema and trapez ltd. ‘solitaire’ finds quenum on fine form, on the lead track, dubby fx and bass shaking shots roll out over an urgent disco beat, muted brass and technoid stabs fire from all directions as the tension building pads flourish. shadowy forces are at play on ‘mystic’, discordant sounds echo and bellow over reverberating percussion and a dense back beat that fire into life with shuffling hi-hats. wrapping up this welcome return to the label is ‘mystery’, whipping snares and industrial clangs rumble over the urgent drums for more hypnotizing dancefloor work from philippe!

benales opens the e.p. with radiate, a track where you can clearly hear his influences of the american school of 90s minimal techno. long time dj but new on the production side, this is benales first effort on vinyl. after his initial masterpiece on knotweed records (kw006) and a handful of releases on demented (hiss 1992) and krill, opuswerk is back on knotweed with displacement, a trippy, hard hitting, analogic techno attack: no concession on this one! gonzalo md has already delivered the goods on both knotweed (kw004 and kw011) and decision making theory (dmt 006), as well as a fantastic ep recently on extrasolar. here, with sharp oscillation, he keeps developing his unique style, producing a highly percussive, almost samba-like, piece of techno. label owner philippe petit closes the e.p. with indian summer, a track moving along a warm bassline, bearing some recognisable krautrock influences.

modern love very rarely reaches out to artists outside of its immediate surroundings, it’s happened just a couple of times in the last 14 years. but there’s something about philippe hallais that compelled the label to ask him if he wanted to do something together. philippe has released music on a bunch of cool labels (l.i.e.s., the trilogy tapes, delsin, in paradisum), but hearing the first tracks recorded for lighthouse stories, it was obvious philippe was hitting on something new: a kinda weird slow/fast dance music that sounded like a footwork variant sewn up with an exotic production style that was impossible to pin down. these tracks eventually splintered off into different directions, held together by a strong sense of narrative and motion harking back to a teenage obsession with turntablism, detroit electro and ghetto house, and eventually juke and grime. although he’s spent the last few years focusing on more industrial dancefloor variants, for lighthouse stories philippe turned to these foundational influences, as well as his love of mixtapes and sound collages full of unfinished ideas, skits and experiments, all things that inform the flow of this new album. lighthouse stories captures a sense of nostalgia well, but is also a futuristic vision full of that exploratory, vibrant spirit that’s so hard to find in electronic music these days. frames of reference are hard, but in places it reminds us of the dusted swagger of anthony shake shakir, the acquatic drexciyan movements of ultradyne, a loose-limbed take on shangaan, and of actress at his most submerged. but ultimately, it’s an album made by a producer looking to his personal history while forging new ground, pushing ahead with little regard to convention and ultimately ending up with something completely unique: a kind of intimate journal rendered in bright colours and odd shapes.

with the release of this set of remixes figure head len faki reveals previously unseen shades of both the source material and his own musical identity. produced over the course of last year and originally never intended to come out, the hidden objects were to remain just that – hidden from anyone but faki himself who was privately developing a different side of his in the studio.

i first heard of julixo when i put my hands on his fantastic ep called silas released on rauh 005. after that, i kept a close eye on the sounds he was posting, and when i heard rebho, i knew we were going to do something together. the warm synth line, together with the jackin drum patterns, were perfect. then came reflections, which fitted superbly with rebho. although slower, and maybe more introspective, you still have that warm feeling going through the track. we decided to go with life of crime on the other side of the record. much more aggressive in its construction, that track deserved a side on its own: modern techno at its best. i hope you will enjoy this nice versatile release as much as i do! best regards, philippe petit

the opening track on this double sided gynltd series comes from hironori takahashi. speclaz displays sharp panned cymbals and sonics, underpinned by a pulsey rhythm and modulated organesque synths. the takaaki itoh remix is a deeper and more moody affair, albeit with a similar syncopated rhythm structure and some tasty modulated acidic synth stabs with filtered atmospherics. on the flip-side, myk derill s crossroads takes a turn for a more broken industrial rhythm with looped vocal chants holding it all together before breaking down into a washed out synth breakdown, then returning to the pre-emnent fat rhythm and vocalised stabs. finally track 4 sees philippe petit remix, with the artist opting for a very stripped back 4-4 hi-hats/percussive workout underpinning minimalistic modulated synth and gentle bassy offsets. the most tooled-up track of this ep.
